Gastrolith / Dinosaur Gizzard Stone. A gastrolith is a stomach or gizzard stone, which is a rock held in the gastrointestinal track of a dinosaur to aid in breaking down plant matter. Gastroliths in some species are held in the muscular gizzard and used to grind up hard fibrous plant material that the animal would otherwise be unable to eat. The gastroliths get rounded and polished by this grinding action. Most gastroliths appear to be from saurpod species. The size of gastroliths depends on the size of the animal and they can range from grains of sand to cobble sized. These gastroliths come from the Morrison formation (centered in Wyoming and Colorado, with outcrops in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho). Jurrasic in age approximately 150 million years old.
