These specimens are true fragments of Triceratops frill. The frill is elongated bones that are part of the skull - it looks like a giant fan near the horns of the Triceratops. Frills functions seemed to be both for protection against predators like t-rex and possibly for display. Paleontologists have uncovered brow horns and frills that were partially healed from t-rex tooth marks, suggesting that the Triceratops successfully fended off its attacker. Triceratops was a massive animal, comparable in size to an African Elephant. It grew up to 30 feet / 9 meters and weighed well over 11,000 lbs., some larger specimens weighed nearly 15,750 lbs. This Triceratops specimen is from the Hell Creek formation (The formation stretches over portions of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming). The Hell Creek is Cretaceous age is from 140 million years ago, to 65.5 million years ago at the extinction of the dinosaurs.
